"Does demerara sugar have the same potassium content as regular brown sugar? My father needs to eat a low potassium diet, and has been avoiding brown sugar and molasses, and I was wondering if he could eat demerara sugar."
A low potassium diet can be one of the trickier ones out there to stick to; so congrats to you and your father for being so careful to even look at sugar. To answer your question; Demerara sugar is a great alternative to brown sugar for your father. Basically; it is minimally processed sugar cane with a light brown color to it due to negligible amounts of natural molasses left behind. Per ounce of demerara sugar there is 110 calories and 27 grams of sugar, no potassium, sodium… nothing. The same amount of brown sugar will contain 107 calories, 27.6 g of sugar, 11mg sodium, 24.1mg of calcium and 98.3mg of potassium. Brown sugar gets all that extra "stuff" from it’s processing due to the addition of molasses onto regular table sugar.
Best of luck!
